A fisherman on the Norfolk coast casually watches a man walk from the sea, encased in a vinyl bag, and directs him to a nearby village as though nothing were amiss.
Steed visits Mrs Peel while she's practicing her fencing
and proposes a trip to the seaside. She makes him fence to
get milk for their coffee and after a slap on the bottom and
getting wrapped in the curtains she concedes to his
plan, learning he's already bought the tickets.
On the train, he servers a complete afternoon tea from his
carpet bag - except he's forgotten lemon for the tea - and
tells her something's very fishy in the small North Sea
village of Little Bazeley... four ministry agents have gone
missing on assignment there, so they're investigating.
Joined on the train trip by the burly Jimmy Smallwood, they are greeted coldly by the stone-faced locals at the pub. By morning, Smallwood is missing, hounded down and killed overnight while trying to locate his brother.
On the surface, all is quiet, but the Avengers find Smallwood's body on the beach. They then proceed to discover that every person in the village is an impostor - the parish records have been destroyed, and the old air raid bunkers under the primary school are being stocked with arms and soldiers, ready to invade Britain.
Having trapped the invaders underground (sound familiar?), the Avengers return to London on a motor scooter.
