still to come: pub sign, skittles, suntan lotion boxes, canary, mine.

The murky scene of ghostly apparitions and mysterious deaths and disappearances. Convincingly grubby, with dust and cobwebs piled high in the corners; the bellrope is a nice touch, the sally suitably greasy from use. So too the knight's tomb with his effigy sculpted on its top, but weirdly holding a real sword. |

Graveyard

The gloomy setting for the murky scene of ghostly apparitions... stop me if you've heard this one before. I like the convincingly gritty gravestones and the slates on the chapel roof. It's almost a pity that the stained glass doesn't seem to match the interiors, but who would notice that in passing. On the right is a behind the scenes shot of filming in the graveyard set. |

town pub
©1961-9 CANAL+IMAGE UK Ltd All Rights Reserved |
The focal point of any small town or village is the pub, and this one's the quintessential pub - horse brasses, soggy beer mats, dark wood panelling and a grumpy clientele. Probably impossible to find anywhere anymore, except maybe in Sydney, Australia, passing itself off as an "Irish Pub".

I've lumped these two together because they're both in studio, and use the same brick wall with windows set drop - you'll see it again as a station and a stilt factory. Oh, I put the other picture in as it shows Mrs Peel uncharacteristically in white mechanic's overalls, on her knees before Steed's mighty throbbing engine.

Benedict Estate sign

"Beautiful bright paint, excellent lettering, easy to read. I'd have preferred a 4-point Doric myself, but on the whole I'd say an excellent notice."
Appreciated, if not obeyed by Steed upon his entry to the estate.
[NOTE: Howard Hayden recently observed that a 4pt Doric is the size of font you'd use for the fine print on a legal document, while the sign's probably in 400pt. Steed was alluding to his ignoring the sign (i.e. he'd have a better excuse for ignoring it if it were in 4pt Doric). ] |

A doctored set of traffic lights somewhere in the Hertfordshire countryside summons Mrs Peel to leap into action, Steed approaching her from behind.

underground city
©1961-9 CANAL+IMAGE UK Ltd All Rights Reserved |
What hare-brained invasion scheme would be complete without a ridiculously impossible underground headquarters? They'd done it once before in "The Town of No Return", and another mob try the same lark here, on the west coast rather than the east, or are we heading towards Newcastle? None of the locals sound particularly Geordie or Welsh, so it's a bit of a mystery where we're supposed to be. Anyway, impressively enormous sets, giving a convincing spacial extent to the city. Puts me in mind of "Things to Come". |

uniforms

What's an underground city thronging with enemy troops without the silly uniforms the invaders have to were? And what's sillier than different members of the same assault force wearing different colours of the same uniform? Ever eager to give the public what they want, the producers made sure uniforms were on hand, and very silly indeed. |

Scene of more than one death, this placid-looking house runs deep with the blood of the feline's victims. Such a cute little pussy cat too. |

Mrs Peel's flat
©1961-9 CANAL+IMAGE UK Ltd All Rights Reserved |
What a mess! But what a clever idea. They intend to redesign the set of Mrs Peel's flat for 1968, but before it's unveiled we have an episode where she's stripping the wallpaper and painting, and we don't see it all in the next episode (it must be really grotty then). |
