Re: "The Avengers" - UK repeat data 1964-1976

I think repeats are a major part of the story in terms of any series... and an element that's so often over-looked. Because their deployment amidst first run does create a very different memory, a different feeling , compared to the one that we often get from tabulated premiere dates. The extension...

Re: Videotaped Episodes

I remember being a little underwhelmed during the early 90s channel 4 repeat run, then again I didn't even really get into the Danger Man repeats where they showed a couple of episodes, The Paper Chase was one of them, I think. I remember some messing about with a go-kart. It seemed to lack the maj...

Re: Videotaped Episodes

... and, I think, also because it simply wasn't as accessible during - say - the 1980s as the filmed episodes. Very little of any size could be written from a viewing of one rather ratty print of "Death of a Great Dane" which seemed to continually do the rounds or the odd screening at the...

Re: "The Avengers" - UK repeat data 1964-1976

I just wanted to say what a fantastic body of data these repeat screenings notes are! This fills in a lot of gaps in my knowledge and reminds me of repeat screenings in the London area back in the '60s and early '70s. While The Avengers was still an ongoing show, Rediffusion routinely mixed repeats ...

Re: Videotaped Episodes

Once the filmed era began, the Blackman series became a legendary thing, a distant memory which was no longer accessible due to a lack of further repeats. So not much was known about it if you didn't watch them originally. In the pre-internet days, hard facts were difficult to come by and it was har...

Re: Videotaped Episodes

Ah, thanks! It's always been a puzzler to me. I remember lapping up Dave Rogers' first Avengers book when it came out around 1983 and reading for the first time of all these legendary Blackman episode titles with synopses and wondering if I'd ever see any of them! I knew around then that a few of th...

Re: Videotaped Episodes

I don't think they were recycled that fast though, especially as a lot of the ABC archive survived on VT right up to 1976. There were repeats of Blackman episodes from both series in 1964 / 5 though (plus a clip used in 1966), so they were definitely around for at least about three years after initi...

Videotaped Episodes

Something I've always wondered about is the fate of the videotaped episodes and when exactly the tapes were disposed of. After a repeat season of Blackman episodes prior to the Rigg series beginning, the videotaped era of The Avengers vanished from sight completely in the UK. A brief clip from Mandr...

Re: 1967: exit of J. Bryce, entry of B. Clemens and A. Fennell

Thanks! Yes, it's a shame Spooner wasn't added to the roster of the original series. Series 5 definitely missed the presence of Roger Marshall and a few of the other earlier writers though. Marshall went on to greatness with Public Eye though, so that was a good thing. I'd be interested to know what...

Re: 1967: exit of J. Bryce, entry of B. Clemens and A. Fennell

I am a new member here but have always been endlessly fascinated by this brief period when Bryce returned and a change of direction was proposed. For my money, it isn't the more surreal or stylistic elements which were getting out of control by the start of series 5 but the over abundance of humour ...
