Another subtle in-joke in The Danger Makers?

Post by Jiggly »

Just watched this for the first time today - I had a vague recollection that this wasn't held in such high esteem, but I thought it was tremendous stuff (although anything with Charles Crichton at the helm always gets my vote anyway).

Anyway, maybe I'm reading too much into this (or maybe its been referenced elsewhere) but I couldn't help but smile at Emma's little "elementary" quip when Steed explains the links that drew him to tracking down the bad guy - especially since the latter was played by Douglas Wilmer, whose stint as Sherlock Holmes had been broadcast earlier that same year by the BBC :)

Quite likely. And I'm quite fond of the episode, too.

Far too subtle for me, I'd have to say...

The 'Ah, Mrs. Gale! Whatever could she be doing at Fort Knox' (or similar) would be for the benefit of UK viewers who may have wondered where Cathy had got to, but this ... ? Possibly a in-joke for their own amusement (?)

Wilmer was very well known as Holmes at the time. I can't imagine that it wasn't a knowing joke, but I would imagine if Wilmer wasn't on screen when the quip was uttered, it'd have been missed by the audience.
