What makes a "good" Avengers set?

Is it like "good" incidental music, fitting in so unobtrusively that it helps tell the story and you do not even notice it is there?

Or is it memorable (perhaps memorably daft) like the huge "OBSERVATION" set in "My Wildest Dream"? Menacing and atmospheric, like Keller's nightmare house? Or so good that you can't even tell it's a set (a very few of the "exteriors")?

Then there are the amazing sets created on a shoestring in the videotaped era, that have to function for as-live recording from multiple camera angles at once... a far harder and more expert job for any set designer.

I'm getting old and my memory is not what it was, so, from memory, I can only list the most memorable... in no particular order...

* Gambit's flat - The New Avengers - TNA had a lot of location interiors and thus few sets to choose from. I do love Gambit's decor.
* "Last of the Cybernauts", Kane's base with all the photo blow-ups of his enemies. Talk about obsessed!
* the big nose in "You'll Catch Your Death". Sheer madness.
* the lighthouse in "All Done With Mirrors". Notoriously hard sets to film (narrow spiral stairs) but well achieved.
* The ship in "Mission to Montreal"; exceptionally well doen for the time, and even now.
* The Glass House in "Forget-Me-Knot" - seemed fairly real, hardly a set at all. I loved the swinging lights for the opening fight.
* Brandon Storey's Dickensesque house especially the cobwebby Great Expectations room. Very little to see but such atmosphere in what there was.
* Keller's "House that Jack Built".
* "Second Sight's" blind man's room with the shapes for navigation.
* IIRC, Most of those in "The Golden Eggs", especially the snowy house yard for the fight and where the room where Cathy is imprisoned. I might be mixing episodes in my mind.

and the booby prize:
-Cathy Gale's "techno nightmare" pad with the metal louvres, revolving tabletop and sticking door. Great for bloopers but surely awful to live in.
Last watched: "The Charmers"

The period sets were full of atmosphere, so
1ST. TOO MANY XMAS TREES. (BEST EVER SET!)
then in no order;
2.FOG.
3.ESCAPE IN TIME.
4.PANDORA.
5.CASTLE DE'ATH.
6.TOUCH OF BRIMSTONE.

Also everyone loves old spooky houses so;
7.DON'T LOOK BEHIND YOU
8.THE JOKER
9.HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT

Plus for it's authentic look;
10.DEATH AT BARGAIN PRICES.

Loads more, but I reckon that's the best 10.

the dream warehouse in Death's Door
the nursery with its evil wallpaper in Something Nasty in the Nursery
the closed railway station in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the S
the joke shop in £50,000 Breakfast
the lighthouse in All Done with Mirrors
the PURRR headquarters in The Hidden Tiger
Hopkirk's HQ in Honey for the Prince
Uncle Jack's house
Brandon Storey's Dickensian mansion in Too Many X Trees
Togetherness Marriage Bureau in Murder Market

I also liked Mother's HQ on a London bus

however, the number one set for me is Steed's appartment in Season 4

01 Escape in Time
Defenetly the greatest set-design for the Avengers. The Mackiedookie Court is superb. Even the sets from the "Past-Tense" and the Costumes are brilliant.

02 The House That Jack Built
Great surreal design, which seemed to come from outer space. Mysterious Soundeffects and perfect balance between the b&w. house and Emmas costume.

03 Death at Bargain Prices
The design from the great store is brilliant. The whole set is extravagant.

Areal cottage from "Never, Never Say Die"

...and I love how talking with a foreign accent rather than talking in a foreign language can make you understood on the radio! Hilarious!

Just curious, but has it ever been said whether the interior scenes were actually shot in the castle, or in the studio?
