You could call it a convention. Although professions also have conventions, most fan events are so named - although Jon Pertwee always insisted on calling Dr Who conventions "conferences" and so do a few other old-school types :)
so what's the beef ? convention sounds just fine,and not tacky...or would
people prefer to label it a 'fan fest' etc ?

Lavenham sounds terrific. Hopefully it'll be a different weekend to the Treasure Hunt. Most definitely interested in hearing what the guests have to say about the show.
