I recall rather vividly when I first started watching The Avengers. I was in 10th grade and had taken an issue of Entertainment Weekly to school with me. At a moment before my Algebra II class started, I pulled out the magazine to read it and flipped it open to an advertisement featuring a b/w picture of our heroes.

The tagline on the ad said, I believe, 'Wit and Panache' and I was heavily intrigued.

It was advertising that the show was about to start on A&E in October of 1990.

So, naturally, I tuned in.

I fell in love with the chemistry between Steed and Mrs. Peel.....plus I absolutely adored his car, and thought Patrick Macnee was rather attractive also.

I've been a fan ever since.

Of course, I've aged.....and the show just stays the same....beautiful and timeless.

She told me sometimes "I'm going to watch the Avengers".
One afternoon, I decided to watch the series with her, and I saw NEVER NEVER SAY DIE.
Something happened, I don't know why, but I was literaly captivated by the episode, the story with all those duplicates.
After that I continued watching it every Saturday.

I have to add that I had also seen an extract of THE HIDDEN TIGER, one day, few weeks before the discovery of my passion. The scene in question was the one in which Emma arrives in the laboratory.
But I prefer saying that NNSD was the first due to the fact that it's the first episode that I saw entirely.
Hi do you happen to have a copy of What the Butler Saw?on Video ??
We could come to an arrangement. Thanks!

I'm a 25 year old young man and I discovered the Avengers when I was just a kid, around 8 or 9. The oldest memory I've got of the show is Steed shooting targets thrown in the air by Mrs. Peel in a Monochrome episode (I think it was Quick Quick Slow Death). I immediately sympathized with these quirky and elegant characters, so far away from the reality I lived in.

In the adolescence I became a fan of the series, watching the repeats on TV.

I discovered the Avengers when the first broadcasts were made in the U.S in 1966 whilst I was still in college. After the first episode, I was completely, irrevocably hooked. I was (and am) a rabid fan, from Cathy to Emma to Tara to Purdy. When the episodes popped up again on A&E, I watched them all again, until my family thought I'd gone around the bend. I seem to remember that I went through them again on BBC reruns on American cable.

Since I normally receive Amazon gift certificates for birthday and Christmas, I recently purchased the Emma Peel mega-set, and all five sets of the Tara season. I'm currently working through the Tara episodes.

After this Christmas and birthday (only 10 days apart), I'm off again looking for N/A and the Cathy seasons.

There have been many discussions about the best and worst episodes, but here's how I feel about it. Any episode is better than no episode.

I'm a 70s kid, so I got everything backward. I "met" James Bond in the person of Roger Moore, Simon Templar had the face of Ian Ogilvy and "the Avengers" were Steed, Gambit and Purdy. (I'd already encountered Patrick MacNee as Lord Iblis...and the narrator...on "Battlestar Galactica").

For me, "Mrs Peel" was just a mysterious woman at the other end of the telephone in an episode of "The New Avengers". Steed seemed to greatly value her advice, despite her having clung to 1960s hairdos and outfits well into the late 70s.

Once I bought an issue of "Starlog" magazine which included a free record of classic TV tunes, and that's where I first heard Laurie Johnson's theme for the original show. There was an ad in the back of that magazine for years offering a full "Avengers" soundtrack album with a photo on the sleeve of Steed and Emma gazing dreamily out of a window. That was all I had until A&E started running the show in the early 90s and I fell hard.

The rest, as they say, is history. Just my history, so you wouldn't have read it. :-)

It was 1968 for me. I was 14 years old. My younger brother and I discovered the show without ever having seen an ad for it. It was unlike anything we had ever seen on TV. We both fell hard for the show and for Diana Rigg.

Hola Where did you get that photo from???Which episode!!
The sexual tension between Peel and Steed gives the show dynamic sexual tension

Sounds similar to me. Moore was my first Bond and Ogilvy my first Templar. However, I did see Steed and Emma before Tara and TNA, and of course well before Cathy and Keel. The most extreme though is my first Doctor (Who): David Tennant. I've since watched the Eccleston eps, but still none of the originals.

I played John Steed

Post by Fido »

Back in 1966 when I was in fifth grade we always played secret agent in the school yard during recess. Unfortunately, I got there late one day and I was assigned the character of John Steed since Solo, Kuriakin, Bond and Drake had already been taken.

This is before I even saw the series. A week later I tuned in and watched my first BW episode with Diana Rigg, the Bentley, the brolly and bowler. I have been hooked ever since.

Cheers,
Fido
