Cybernaut

Post by anti-clockwise »

I did not realise that there is actually a new definition for the word cybernaut used as a noun. It now means, "a person who is wired for a virtual reality trip". How the word got morphed into this I have not a clue. I like the old meaning myself.

All the uses of the word Cybernetics (from the greek Kubornesis, a Steersman) in the past are interesting - explanation
However I like the first definition as it appears to be what The Cybernauts are like in The Avengers - "(a science concerned with the study of) systems of any nature which are capable of receiving, storing, and processing information so as to use it for control"

I am told that he word Cybernaut was gradually used from the 1960's. My 1959 Collins Contemporary Dictionary seems to confirm this, in listing Cybernetics but not Cybernaut. The Avengers was quite innovative!
