Hendry / Keel

Post by mousemeat »

Consider the alternative...if during the course of season one, Steed left the series, either by leaving himself, or was written out..and Keel continue the series on to season two, and beyond...would it have been just as successful, with Hendry, and would Honor Blackman joined on, as Cathy Gale...(?)

My guess is that the producers would have continued with the doctor and the spy scenario and that another male actor would have replaced Patrick Macnee. The series may have run for another season or two, but I don't think it would have had the success it did without Honor Blackman as Cathy Gale.

The audiences were more interested in undercover agents than general practitioners so it would have flopped quickly if Macnee had left or been written out.

Can't see The Avengers surviving without Steed. The development of the show reveals what works and the Steedesque element is what puts The Avengers apart from other spy-fi shows.

true...however, the whole scenario that made up Steed, took pretty much the second season, with first Venus, than Mrs. Gale..as the writers were fleshing him out..they might have done a similar spin, with Keel....but we'll never really know..and yeah, Steed was the factor, in helping to establish the series popularity
