But what if the Morning After "relationship" developed after the Look Stop Me... events (or was Merlin killed in that one?). Perhaps Steed got to know Merlin during incarceration or interrogation, after the first adventure.
Bit of a stretch, I'll admit, but interesting they used the same name in the same season.
