We even get a regiment of "gentlemen" doing Hitler-salutes with their swordstick umbrellas chanting "Hail! Hail!" (hailing a taxicab!).

Blimey! After 40 odd years I never got this! How wunderbar!

This one also deserves a tip of the bowler for the great atmospheric it has in the opening scene- a gaslamp lit cobblestone street in the fog. Ahhhh... British to the core!

That's one of my all time favourite Avengers moments, especially that little almost self indulgent little smile that Emma gives upon reading that.
My too :)

I like this episode.
And me, as russian, particularly funny stake out "russian" - they have a strange non-russian name, Olga has a male patronymic name (from what name it is formed, hitherto can not understand), and etc.
Say, Oliga really talks with accent?
Words Emma's "Do svidanya, tovarisch" I have understood only with third times, such strong accent

I've been working my way through the colour Peel's and this was one of several episodes I hadn't seen before - hadn't heard too much about it either, so I had few definite expectations. From the opening teaser sequence however I found myself quite hooked - anything with the ever-watchable Peter Barkworth is always worth putting the time aside for anyway in my book! (never known him to give a less than satisfactory performance)..

I don't think I can really add to the many observations above - the lovely dialogue, the admirably tight and stylish direction (love Madoc's somersault into the armchair too), the numerous visual gags etc - I just thought it was nigh-on perfect. And amongst the 'hailing' SNOB trainees did I not spy an uncredited role for Michael Elwyn - later a semi-regular as Duncan - "the Minister's Hatchet Man" - in the BBC series Doomwatch?

Anna Quayle makes this episode for me. I've loved her ever since Casino Royale. Shame she's retired from acting, I'm sure there is some great stuff she could still give.

It's not Charles Crichton's most stylish episode but he gets the tone perfectly right and the cast are wonderful. Nice set design. Shame the music is all recycled.

I feel the same way about this as I do The Charmers, they're both very watchable and fun and great episodes from their respective seasons.

They're great aren't they. I found them on the Rex Features photo website (used by newspaper etc). There's quite a few rare Avengers photos. Sadly without being a member, you can only view the small preview picks.

I've got a Diana Rigg one as well.

Yes, indeed it was Michael Elwyn (recently a semi-regular as Maid Marian's dad in the BBC's Robin Hood) - he talks about his two Avengers appearances on a fan interview I have. He also played the soldier-dressed-as-a-monk who operates the security systems in the later Tara episode "Get-A-Way". I think in the SNOB story documentation he's credited as "young fencer" or something! He's the one doing practice sword-swishes as they enter the training hall. Strangely The Avengers Forever doesn't list him under "doppelgangers" (actors who play more than one role in multiple episodes). A very good and now major actor, who is very different in every role he's in. If you'd like a copy of the fan interview on DVD (PAL only I'm afraid) let me know! It has many clips of him and reminiscences from his early career and to date. No obligation though.
