SCOTTISH

Scottish TV was the franchise for Central Scotland.

SERIES ONE
Effectively replacing the ATV sitcom “If the Crown Fits…”, the series alternated with “Deadline Midnight”. 7 episodes were shown fortnightly from 10 June to 2 September 1961 (relayed from ABC). At the end of the run, “Deadline Midnight” continued in a later slot while “The Avengers” was effectively replaced by “Ghost Squad”. The later episodes were not scheduled.

SERIES TWO
Unlike the other regions, Scottish did not schedule Series Two as part of the Autumn 1962 season. Effectively replacing the US police procedural “Naked City”, 12 episodes aired weekly on Thursdays from 11 April to 27 June 1963, before the slot was returned to “Naked City”.

SERIES THREE
Effectively replacing “The Human Jungle”, these episodes aired weekly on Saturdays from 28 September 1963 to 21 March 1964 (relayed from ABC from 16 November), after which it was replaced by “The Protectors”.

SERIES FOUR
Replacing the US wartime adventure series “Combat!”, these episodes aired weekly on Tuesdays from 28 September 1965 to 22 March 1966, after which it was replaced by movies.

SERIES FIVE
Replacing movies, these episodes initially aired weekly (in monochrome) initially on Saturdays from 14 January to 18 March 1967 (relayed from ABC), after which the slot was given to “Danger Man”.

Replacing “Haunted”, further episodes aired on Saturdays from 7 October to 18 November 1967 (on a delayed relay from ABC), and was then replaced by movies.

Replacing movies, the remaining episodes aired on Fridays from 8 December 1967 to 19 January 1968, after which the slot was given to “Public Eye”.

SERIES SIX
Replacing movies, the episodes had a delayed start compared to the Autumn 1968 debut in most regions and aired weekly on Thursdays (in monochrome) from 2 January to 1 May 1969, after which the series was replaced by “The Champions”.

Now operating a colour service, three further episodes were scheduled at lunchtime on Sundays from 6 to 20 January 1974, replacing “The Saint” and replaced by the US police procedural “Adam-12”.

Further isolated episodes ran late-night on Friday 8 February 1974 and at lunchtime on Saturday 4 May 1974.

Replacing films, six further episodes aired late-night on Fridays from 18 October to 6 December 1974 (with pre-empts on 1 and 15 November), before the slot was given to the Hammer anthology “Journey to the Unknown”.

A further episode was scheduled late-night on Sunday 26 January 1975.

As such, Scottish Television did not apparently carry any repeats of “The Avengers”.

CHANNEL

Channel Television serving the Channel Islands was launched on 1 September 1962 – i.e. shortly before Series Two. Much of its schedule was effectively relaying programmes from Westward.

SERIES TWO
These episodes aired weekly on Saturdays from 29 September to 29 December 1962 (relayed from ABC). At New Year, the slot was changed; the Saturday placing was given to “Dimension of Fear”, and “The Avengers” effectively replaced “Ghost Squad” on Sundays from 6 January to 3 March 1963 (relayed from ATV London). There was then another schedule change two months later when “The Avengers” swapped places with “24-Hour Call” and moved back to Saturdays (relayed from ABC) from 9 to 23 March 1963, after which the slot was taken by “The Human Jungle”.

SERIES THREE
Replacing “Sergeant Cork”, these episodes aired weekly on Saturdays from 28 September 1963 to 21 March 1964 (relayed from ATV London until 28 December and then ABC), after which it was replaced by “The Protectors”.

SERIES FOUR
Replacing movies, these episodes aired weekly on Saturdays from 2 October 1965 to 26 March 1966 (generally relayed from ABC), after which it was replaced by “Redcap”.

SERIES FIVE
Effectively replacing “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”, these episodes aired weekly (in monochrome) initially on Fridays from 13 January to 10 March 1967 (relayed from Rediffusion). This slot was then given to “No Hiding Place” and “The Avengers” moved to Wednesdays as a replacement for “Hong Kong” (although “Hong Kong” aired on 22 March) from 15 March to 12 April 1967.

Effectively replacing “Man in a Suitcase”, a further six episodes aired weekly (in monochrome) on Fridays from 5 January to 9 February 1968, after which the slot was given to “The Saint”.

Replacing “Garrison’s Gorillas”, it was planned to air the remaining five episodes on Wednesdays from 10 July to 14 August 1968, with one pre-empt:
Wed 31/07/1968 Max
However, the industrial dispute meant that the last two episodes did not air and were replaced by “I Spy” from the national service.

When the strike was resolved, Series Four repeats began in a late-night Thursdays slot:
Thu 22/08/1968 23:00 Quick-Quick Slow Death
Thu 29/08/1968 23:00 A Touch of Brimstone
Thu 05/09/1968 23:00 How to Succeed… at Murder

This slot was then given to the Thames chat show “The Eamonn Andrews Show”.

SERIES SIX
Replacing the US Western “Custer”, these episodes aired weekly on Thursdays (in monochrome) from 3 October 1968 to 2 January 1969 (relayed from ATV); there was one week’s pre-empt:
Thu 26/12/1968 [Christmas schedule]

The series swapped places with a slot used for movies and moved to Fridays from 10 January to 28 February 1969 (relayed from ATV), after which it was replaced by “The Name of the Game”.

Replacing movies, the series resumed on Saturdays from 17 May to 5 July 1969, after which it was again replaced by “The Name of the Game”.

Effectively replacing “The Champions”, the final four episodes aired on Wednesdays from 30 July to 20 August 1968, after which the slot was filled by “Department S”.

Replacing “The Name of the Game”, Series Four began repeats in a late-night slot on Mondays; the episode titles are taken from Westward listings, and it is possible that the Channel transmissions varied from these:

HTV

Taking over the west of England and Welsh franchises, Harlech Television picked up from TWW and Teledu Cymru.

SERIES FIVE
HTV continued with new, previously unbroadcast episodes of Series Five in the same slot as the repeats of Series Four on Sundays (in monochrome) from 26 May to 14 July 1968. After this, there were two further Series Four repeats:

After this, the slot was due to be given to films (from LWT).

Replaced by films (from ATV) on Thursdays, the series then moved to Fridays – effectively replacing “Peyton Place” – from 10 January to 2 May 1969 (relayed from ATV); “The Rotters”, scheduled for 25 April, was not broadcast, and the slot was then given to “It Takes a Thief”. The post-watershed episode “My Wildest Dream” was then aired in a late-night slot on Sunday 4 May in a slot normally used for arts documentaries, and was followed by “The Rotters” the following week. “Bizarre” was scheduled for Friday 30 May in a one week gap between repeats of “The Human Jungle” and the LWT police serial “The Gold Robbers”, but was screened in place of a “Danger Man” repeat late-night on Monday 2 June.

YORKSHIRE

Yorkshire Television began broadcasting on 29 July 1968 to a newly defined territory which was effectively half of the previous north of England franchise operated by ABC North at weekends and Granada during the week.

Yorkshire planned to start its new schedule with late-night airings of Series Four episodes that had not been previously repeated on ABC North, but immediately fell foul of the industrial action that forced most of the ITV network into a networked national service for around a fortnight:
Sun 04/08/1968 23:10 The Town of No Return [presumably not broadcast]
Sun 11/08/1968 [The Auction Game – networked service]
Sun 18/08/1968 [The Auction Game – networked service]
Sun 25/08/1968 23:10 A Touch of Brimstone
Sun 01/09/1968 23:10 What The Butler Saw
Sun 08/09/1968 23:10 The House that Jack Built
Sun 15/09/1968 23:10 Castle De'Ath
Sun 22/09/1968 23:10 The Danger Makers
The slot was then given over to ATV’s talk show “Tonight with Dave Allen”.

SERIES SIX
Replacing “Mission: Impossible”, these episodes were aired (in monochrome) initially on Wednesdays from 25 September to 23 October 1968 (relayed from Thames), after which the slot was given to “The Champions” and the series was moved to Fridays – where it replaced movies – from 1 November 1968 to 17 January 1969 (sometimes relayed from ATV). It was then replaced by “The Name of the Fame” and moved to Saturdays in place of movies from 25 January to 17 May, after which the slot was returned to “The Champions” (which had also aired on 12 April 1969). During this time, the collapse of the Emley Moor transmitter meant that “Who Was That Man I Saw You With?”, scheduled for 22 March, was rescheduled to 10 May. The post-watershed episode “My Wildest Dream” then aired late-night on Sunday 31 May, a slot normally used for films.

Replacing the US espionage series “The Man Who Never Was”, Series Six repeats – now screened in colour (apparently the first colour UK screenings of “The Avengers”) – commenced on Tuesdays in a primetime slot:

ATV

The franchise reorganisation of July 1968 meant that ATV ceased to operate as ATV Midlands on weekdays and ATV London at the weekends and now served the Midlands for the whole week, as such taking on the weekend schedules from ABC Midlands.

SERIES SIX
Replacing “The Saint”, the episodes aired (in monochrome) on Thursdays from 26 September 1968 to 2 January 1969, with a pre-empt for Christmas schedules on 26 December; the series then swapped slots with movies to Friday evenings from 10 January to 2 May 1969, during which time ATV was blacked out by industrial action on 25 April and instead screened a film relayed from LWT.

With three episodes unscreened, the channel launched into repeats, placing movies in the Friday slot and scheduling Series Four repeats not screened by ABC Midlands at primetime on Saturdays in place of films:
Sat 10/05/1969 20:30 The Town of No Return
Sat 17/05/1969 20:30 Castle De'Ath
Sat 24/05/1969 20:30 Too Many Christmas Trees

The repeats then continued into Series Five:

Sat 26/07/1969 21:00 The Fear Merchants
Sat 02/08/1969 21:00 Escape in Time

Sat 13/09/1969 21:00 The Correct Way to Kill
The slot was then returned to films.

Two of the previously unshown Series Six episodes were then screened in late-night slots: “The Rotters” replacing the ATV soap “Honey Lane” for one week on Thursday 9 October 1969 and the post-watershed “My Wildest Dream” (in colour) on Saturday 27 December in a slot normally used for “I Spy”.

Replacing “Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased)”, the Series Five repeats continued in primetime on Fridays:
