"Guising" comes from disguising where children would dress up.

I think it was the late 70's when "trick or treating" started to appear and apparently E.T. was quite an influence in selling the idea more in the 80's.

Halloween wasn't a mainstream thing until the 1980's.

In my experience certainly in London, depending on where you lived, Halloween faded away. The tat is still sold is shops but there is far less trick or treating.

Hopefully there won't be any this year!!

We tended to make more of a fuss about Nov 5th soon after (Bonfire Night), penny for the Guy, etc.

We didn't have Black Friday until a few short years ago either - bloody stupid idea.

Bonfire night ? anything like ' Devil's night ? '....of course, Black FRIDAY, was created for pre holiday SALES.....

I don't know what Devil's Night is! I know some European countries have stuff on or around December 6th (I think?) for Christkindl, Krampus etc - that is, the present-giving baby Jesus (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christkind) and Santa's demonic counterpart (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krampus)!!

Oh yes, Guy Fawkes' Night got all the focus for us.

But even that is on the decline - only the big organised firework displays really than private parties. Of course the Hindu festival Diwali (festival of lights) is within a week or so it can seem like fireworks night lasted a long time (well it felt that way when I lived in London).

when I was a young kid in Detroit, Devil's night was the night before halloween...and at first darkness, we used to yell ' let the devil's night begin '...and it was a evening of fun...soaping windows, tossing toilet paper into trees or bushes, putting a bag of dog poop in a paper bag on a porch, on fire...and unsuspecting owner would come out and stomp it out...much to their horror...and we would do other stupid stuff........sadly, years later, it took on a much more terrible face...for several years, devil's night, was blocks of vacant, even abandoned bldgs, SET on fire....the fire department of the city of Detroit, was busy until dawn....eventually, this sad, anti-social behavior , more or less has ended....i.e. arson.
