Nic page on the stage show, with a stunning pic.
Joanna Lumley auditioned for it, but Sue Lloyd was thought to be a wiser choice as she was a far better known actress at the time.

I've been reading away and really enjoying myself. Lovely write-up for the Keel era, and I've spotted a few new "Quote Unquotes." I noticed Brian Clemens discussed their push to have Tara evolve and be a little more "real", to push to make her "thicker cardboard," which is the first reference I've seen to that pre-TNA. It seems they had a shift going on long before the seventies. Fascinating! Loving the site, Alan.

I noticed the 'thicker cardboard' comment too. This adds the Tara era to The New Avengers era and strengthens my theory that had The Avengers continued through to the early-mid 70's we would have still have ended up with Gambit and Purdey.
Really, there was nothing 'New' about The New Avengers, it would have evolved that way anyway...

I have to agree. You can feel the shift already--partnering Tara with a younger man on more than one occasion, more plots revolving around the interior workings of the Ministry and fellow agents (the corruption plotline starts surfacing here), even the victimization of Steed's friends (the Bassetts, and the three fellows in Get-A-Way) and some of Tara's suitors turning out to be bad news. We may not have ended up with characters called "Purdey" and "Gambit" played by Gareth and Joanna, but we would have had more or less the same series.Dandy Forsdyke wrote:I noticed the 'thicker cardboard' comment too. The Avengers Declassified - the Avengers website with thicker cardboard! ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)
I'm with you that The New Avengers is a natural progression of the original series, and the only reason it's called 'The New' IMHO is to distinguish it from the repeats that had been running for a few years in the various ITV regions.
