I don't think The Avengers was ever the highest rated show in the UK. Top ten/twenty yes.
My 'mainstream' remark was just throwaway, but I meant everyday scheduled programmes like Z Cars and Play For Today. Apart from it's earliest episodes The Avengers was pretty much Out There. The New Avengers got closest to mainsteam I suppose. As was the intention.
It's funny, as Frankymole says, there was no 'cult' programming in the 60's. In our house it was referred to as either 'weird' or 'daft'.
