The thing with the Saint movie in comparison to the Avengers movie is that. the Saint is still a decent 90s thriller, that it is supposed to be a Saint story doesn't matter so much.

The Avengers is completely different, the Avengers is entirely about style, by the mixture of the modern and the classical. Maybe it is just this why the film failed, it wasn't the sixties any more.

Another thing about The Saint is there had been previous incarnations before the ITC series in books, movies and the radio. There had even been another TV series from 1978.

Like James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who, Tarzan etc there was no definitive prescribed way of presenting the character.

One could argue that there were different approaches to The Avengers too, but there was only one constant - Patrick Macnee as John Steed.

I think you hit it on the nail head Dandy. Fans, for the most part, wanted to see Steed and Mrs. Peel as they remembered them. Obviously, they didn't get that so the film was torn to shreds in the reviews. However, there are some people who can and do look beyond that and enjoy the movie for it's other merrits.

I simply think that not enough effort was put into casting, and directing. I said before, I would love to get my hands on the original script to see what was supposed to be.

The full script was released as a book at the time of the film's release, Kim. Affordable secondhand copies are still available from Amazon.com -

here!

- and dirt cheap at Amazon.co.uk (£0.01 + Airmail postage!) -

here!

The Amazon UK link also contains a fairly detailed review that might help make your mind up.

It's worth viewing at least once.

But, IMHO, it was awful. Although I think if Uma had played Emma much more closely to Diana Rigg's portrayal, it would have helped immensely.

If you don't make comparisons to the series it can be a nice distraction for a couple of hours.

I never realized that! I simply thought it was a novelization of the movie itself. I have to have my hot water heater repaired so it will be awhile before I pick up the book, but it will be mine. Oh yes! It will be MINE! *insert bwahaha here* :D

Agreed Helen. I just don't think she nor Fienes portrayed the characters as well as they could have amongst other problems with the movie.

I think it was a problem with the producers, who had NO clue about what the Avengers was truly all about. And remember, Sean Connery was in charge, and he certainly seemed clueless as well. Too bad.
