Promotional photographs of Steed and Emma on the beach

Post by BrianW »

I am interested in this photo of Patrick Macnee and Diana Rigg on the beach - was is used in magazines published in the UK? Perhaps the 'TV Times' magazine? Where was the photo shoot?

David Smith informs me "this photo ... is one of a series taken with him and Diana Rigg (Dec 1964 or later). They were used as promotional stills; it was also something of a "break-in" for Diana Rigg, who had just signed on as Emma Peel (production had not yet started). The image of Macnee in the shot you provided is actually cropped--the end of his umbrella is actually stick in Diana Rigg's top (an outfit the fashion designer called "the Flash").

Stunt coordinator Ray Austin was also present for the shoot. Here's an image of him as he and Diana Rigg demo some stuntwork--

Some images of Diana Rigg with a horse on the beach may also be found on occasion, even though she never appeared with a horse on the beach in the series; this was part of another photo shoot, used once again for promotional stills. Here's an example:

I would have thought they were two seperate photo shoots, the photo with Diana on the horse see's her sporting an Alun Hughes design white "Emmapeeler" that was never used on screen, however a very small piece of film from this shoot can be seen in "Who's Who???", so this would have been late '66 maybe?

The first shoot I presume was in the summer of '65, John Bates outfits that she is seen wearing in the shoot weren't ready by the time Diana started recording and weren't used until about a quarter of the way through filming. Hope that's some help, of course I could be completely wrong by the way!

Thanks - I have posted there also.

The images definitely inspired the output of a famous artist that I am researching - I would be grateful for any help in finding the causal link...

Which magazine(s) were these pictures used in? Was there an Avengers Annual that used them? The 'TV Times' perhaps?

The pic of the first link in the first post of this thread with the tip of Pat's brolly handle resting in Diana's cleavage I've seen elsewhere...I think it's on Diana's site. Interesting and telling pose about the characters' relationship.
