Avengers (and actor related) references in tv series

Post by Philippa »

I thought it would be fun to have a topic about Avengers references in tv series.
I hope I've put this in the right section?

Well lately I've found a funny references in 'The Upper Hand'. When Caroline's ex-husband wants to convince her not to marry Charlie, Laura (Honor) gives him a very Cathy Gale-esque judo kick. Then she walks away.
Later on he says: I'll better be going before Cathy Gale comes back from the kitchen

I thought that was really funny.

Oh and there was a funny reference to Honor being a Bond girl too.
At one point in the series, one of the characters has a goldfish called Goldfinger and a cat called Oddjob

In the film 'To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything: Julie Newmar' - Wesley Snipes playing a drag queen is looking through some clothes in a barn and says 'This is sooo Emma Peel!'

Paul O'Grady mentions The Avengers almost every teatime on ITV1!

Last night as Michelle Ryan (new Bionic Woman) came on the show he greeted her wilth "You look fabulous. You could be a new Avenger girl!" and later, when she said she was working with Anthony Head (on the BBC's Merlin) and felt star-struck Paul said he still feels like that whenever Linda Thorson rings him up.

By the way Paul has his autobiography out and I checked the index for Avengers mentions - and there are loads!

Oh great! I wanted to buy his autobiography anyway, but now I'm definitely buying it.
He definitely has a thing for The Avengers, especially Emma Peel. I think that's just so sweet :D

There's a reference in an episode of Frasier. Frasier and Niles are reminded of their childhood, where they pretended to be the Avengers, complete with chin-strap adorned bowlers.

In another episode of Frasier, Patrick Macnee himself makes a cameo. (Although, that's not technically a reference. :P)

And, of course I was on The Paul O'Grady Show in an Avengers Quiz and beat him! True! If I can I'll upload it to you tube with my new machine that arrived yesterday!

Also, don't forget in 'Diana' there was a sign that read 'Diana Smythe - You're Needed'

He prefers Tara King actually. Have you seen his spoof on 'The Avengers' ? It's the best ever!

When The Avengers Movie was out the UK soap Emmerdale referenced it at a costume/Halloween party.

Tricia Dingle was dressed as Emma Peel and there followed some 'hilarious' dialogue when someone said 'Oh, you look like Diana Rigg' and she replied 'Eh, who's Diana Rigg? Uma Thurman plays Emma Peel - er, duhh!'

I have this episode. You can find the entire transcript of the episode 'Radio Wars' here...

http://www.geocities.com/hollywood/derby/3267/73.html

Here is 'The Avengers' bit...

Martin: My point is, you guys could never resist putting on airs.
Even when you were in junior high, you used to love that
TV program, "The Avengers." You used to run all over the
neighborhood pretending you were that guy with the umbrella...
Steve.

Frasier: Steed!

Niles: [rolls his eyes] Dad!

Frasier: There were worse role models. Steed was dapper and witty.
When anyone tried to give him grief, he gave them a sound
thrashing with the umbrella.

Martin: Well, that's great, admire him if you want. But did you have
to run through the neighborhood in bowler hats? I mean,
you were just begging to get beat up.

Frasier: Come to think of it, it was rather a rough summer that year,
wasn't it?

Niles: I remember getting a chin strap so the bowler wouldn't fall
off when I ran.

Martin: And all that did was make you look like Elizabeth Taylor in
"National Velvet." My point is, if you go down to the station
and read that over the air, then you might as well go down
there in a great big bowler hat. I mean, people are never
going to let you forget it.

"[The bowler] should never be worn abroad, never by foreigners, and
Americans who attempt to do so should be fined."
-- Hardy Amies, designer

Daphne has re-entered with coffee.

Daphne: You know, it's funny hearing you talk about "The Avengers."
My first Halloween in America, I went to a party dressed as
Mrs. Peel. Head-to-toe in that skintight black leather
catsuit. [Niles looks up] Come to think of it, I still have
it somewhere, and Halloween's coming up.

Martin: Catsuit, huh? [referring to Eddie who has just come in]
Better not let this guy hear you talking about that, he'll
go nuts.

Niles: I would not! [sees Eddie] ...be surprised if he did!
Ho-ho-ho. [strokes Eddie]

You beat me to that one.

And Patrick says in Frasier: I always had a thing for brunette's, maybe a Emma Peel reference.
