Incidentally, I've just tried to identify Tara's tartan.

I feel a bit like Piers when he tried to identify a single bagpipe tune among the multitude. (I do remember when trying to find my own ancestors' tartan it took quite a few attempts)

It could be a variant of Erskine Modern or Dunbar Ancient:

And why didn't she wear "Tara Tartan"???

The Scottish surname "King" is a sept of the Clan Gregor / MacGregor. King was the 84th most common surname in Ireland according to the 1901 census. Tara could definitely have got away with wearing this pattern:

I asked Peter MacDonald, the tartan historian (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100057191569943), and he actually found out which tartan it was that Tara was wearing!

Reminds of the pattern they had on bags and suitcases in the 60s, quite horrible, but I guess it was fashionable back then.

At least Tara is as far from being a "bag" as it is possible to get :) Even if she has guns and "will travel"... (the material looks a bit like a travel rug, too... don't let the Clan Lindsay hear us say it though).

I'd say it's a MacLeod or Erskine tartan

Ah yes, thank you. I'd forgotten the green, I was looking at that pic which just seems to be black & red.

BBC Radio 4's The World At One today had an interview with Peter MacDonald about the oldest known tartan from the 16th century which has been reconstructed from a find in a peat bog! (Near the end of the programme.)

And they also have some nice bits on Laurie Jonson - at a few minutes in and at the end of the programme.
