This feels so momentous that the thread title doesn't do it justice

Words are inadequate to express enough gratitude for his generous life and entertaining career, and better to celebrate life than grieve over death, but to quote from one of Macnee's own roles:

Now cracks a noble heart. Good night sweet prince:
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest!

RIP Pat. Thanks for all the amazing adventures of John Steed. You'll never be forgotten.

I met Patrick just the once at a book signing for Deaf in One ear in Manchester. We spoke about both the taped and the filmed episodes and he seemed the complete gentleman, much as his John Steed character.

Thanks for the countless hours of pleasure with The Avengers, The New Avengers and various other film and TV roles.

This just can't be happening. I'm not ready for this.

I feel privileged to have met him at a booksigning, and also seeing him on the West End stage in Killing Jessica in 1987, which I think was the last time Patrick trod the boards in the UK. RIP Patrick.

Patrick Macnee's life was a long, fruitful life which needs to be celebrated. A wonderful man who was a gentleman both on and off the set. No one had a bad word to say about him. I can only add that I have indescribable affection for a man I never met.

I've just had a marvellous week in the company of fans of The Avengers and none of it would have been possible without this incredible man. As with Christopher Lee it's not so much a shock as something I'd long feared would come to pass. A remarkable career on stage and screen and the creator of a character that, no matter who plays the role in the future, he will always be recognised as the definitive interpretation of.
