the ultimate episode?

Post by mousemeat »

we all have favorite shows...but if you personally had to pick one show that best explained the show, or better yet, the best one from all the eras of the show, Gale,Peel, King, and New Avengers, what one would you select ?

Boy that one is tough since each era and each episode was so different, but for me, Too Many Christmas Trees and The House That Jack Built were the epitomy of The Avengers.

Good question, because I would not just go for the best episode of each season. Overall THE CORRECT WAY TO KILL is nice one of course.
It's the Avengers own parody of it self in a way.

From the Gale era, THE NUTSHELL, MANDRAKE, BUILD A BETTER MOUSETRAP and DRESSED TO KILL are episode that really show what the Avengers can be.

For the Peel era these are;
DIAL A DEADLY NUMBER, THE GIRL FROM AUNTIE and TOO MANY CHRISTMAS TREES. (Or almost every monochrome episode)
ESCAPE IN TIME, THE SUPERLATIVE SEVEN, THE HIDDEN TIGER, AFTHOTWTTS and Death's Door.

For the Tara King era:
FALSE WITNESS, SUPER SECRET CYPHER SNATCH and ALL DONE WITH MIRRORS

Oh, are we supposed to choose one from each era?

Then from Mrs Gale's era it would be 'Don't Look Behind You' or 'The Charmers' or 'Dressed to Kill'

Mrs Peel b&w : 'The Hour That Never Was'; 'Too Many Christmas Trees'; 'Death at Bargain Prices'

Mrs Peel colour: 'Murdersville'; 'Epic'; 'You Have Just Been Murdered'

Tara: 'Game'; 'The Morning After'; 'My Wildest Dream'

That was hard work!

For pure wit, Dial A Deadly Number; for seasonal atmosphere Too Many Christmas Trees; for pure drama Take Over; for intelligence Who's Who or Stay Tuned; for surreal atmosphere The Town of No Return or The Hour that Never Was. However, as a guide to would-be fans of what the show could achieve then The Murder Market just loses out to The Cybernauts which I don't think puts a single foot wrong in terms of script, direction or acting. Neither my father nor Clemens could have written that one and I think it was the first ever to be shown in the US.

Myself, I've certainly have enjoyed reading everyone's personal choices
for whatever reason they selected 'em..

heck, makes me wanna boil up a pot of earl grey, with some cakes, and a shot of rum, sit back, and fire the olde dvd player up...

Mrs.Peel, we're needed, indeed!!

So difficult to pick an episode that ticks every box, especially when they're not an Emma Peel...

Without much thought...

"Death At Bargain Prices" has a little bit of everything that the average Joe on the street identifies with "The Avengers":

1. Eccentric characters
2. Outrageous plot
3. Steed being charming
4. Sexual tension (and occasional risque humor)
5. Emma in leather
6. Emma in bondage (or other subtle kinkiness)
7. Emma fighting (with those edgy "finger snaps", no less)
8. Steed and Emma working both together and separately

Not necessarily the best or most satisfying episode, nor my favorite, but perhaps the most demonstrative of all of the elements that are typically associated with The Avengers.

I agree with BitShifter - plus the best line ever uttered in the series.

"I asked the chief predator where to find you and he said, "Our Mrs. Peel is in ladies' underwear." I rattled up the stairs three at a time. "

"Merry quips department on the fifth floor, sir.
