Sad news indeed, one of the few big names from the ranks of the people who made The Avengers that was still left.
(Unlike guest actors or the occasional writer, he contributed to over half the episodes.)

Just to confirm - not a hoax. I've been in touch with Richard over the last year and we corresponded briefly last night.
