Just read the description of tonights episode of Midsomer Murders on ITV at 8pm, sound familar?!
A prestigious golf club is the setting for murder when a player is murdered on the 13th hole. Barnaby and Jones discover assault is rife amongst the snobbish members, who are dismissive of the local villagers and only allow them onto the course for a few hours a week. Before long, another body turns up, making the detectives determined to catch this terror of the fairways.

He made it to the interview/audition stage, but was never screentested if The Ultimate Avengers list is to be believed. Only Gareth, Lewis Collins, and Harry Meacher were actually screentested, but if Brian Clemens is to be believed, he wanted Gareth for Gambit the instant he caught him in Upstairs, Downstairs.mousemeat wrote:how close was he ( Nettles ) was to landing the role ?Dandy Forsdyke wrote:... and John Nettles auditioned for the role of Mike Gambit.
who else was considered-and-or-screen tested ?

I wonder if Brian Clemens was an Upstairs Downstairs fan? He cast Gordon Jackson in The Professionals.
I caught a repeat of UD on ITV3 one afternoon last week. I can see why BC was impressed by Gareth. He could be quite menacing as Frederick but then also the opposite.
I like John Nettles in Midsomer Murders and Bergerac, but he wouldn't have been right for Mike Gambit in my opinion. He looked very different in the 1970s, when I remember him in The Liver Birds.
