Avengers Revisited: yet another creative idea

Post by Rodders »

While many of the forum regulars are busy writing essays on Seasons 5, 6 and TNA, I have an even more challenging creative grenade to throw out into this virtual world. Once our four volume series of books is complete in a year's time, I would like to produce a book covering the series thematically rather than episode by episode, with chapters on the following:

sets
locations
direction
fashion
music
diabolical masterminds
Steed
Emma Peel
Tara King
Purdey
Gambit
surrealism

There are undoubtedly other potential chapters/themes worth investigating. The chapters would be far more challenging and far-reaching but I am convinced that the end result could be fascinating. The ultimate analytical guide to the Avengers on film?! (Maybe sets and locations could even be subdivided). What do people think?

Splendid idea Rodney - I love it - put me down for the perils of Mrs Peel :)

I would love to take on something to do with Steed - although given that he's such a far-reaching and developing character, I wouldn't know quite where to begin. But I'd be very interested!

Sounds fascinating, Rodney! I'll take Gambit, naturally.

I guess that with Steed the starting point would be The Town of No Return, compared to the videotape era Steed and then taking it on from there. What about the quote from Macnee that "[Steed] was the female, Gale was the male".

I think Macnee was wrong, at least in part.

In part, maybe, but he was spot on that The Avengers undermined the masculine/feminine polarity.

Absolutely. The show played with gender roles all throughout its run, which is part of what made the character dynamics so much fun. "Played" being the operative word, because they had a lot of fun with it, as opposed to taking it too seriously. :)

I was rather hoping you'd take on the fashions

I was hoping to take on 'the country house', as a sub-chapter of sets and locations
