No love for Sketch Cards?

Post by Bowthorpe »

Hi everybody,

Unstoppable Cards will soon be releasing their next set of Avengers cards but from what I've seen on this forum a lot of people don't like the sketch cards...

I'm an Avengers fan and an artist and have done several sets for Unstoppable. I'm not an employee of the company, none of the artists that Unstoppable use are, but are asked by Barrie to contribute sketches, usually as we've done so before and we enjoy the subject matter.

I'm in no way professionally trained, but I like creating artwork and I hope people like my doodles.
This is the link to my deviantart page where my previous Avengers cards can all be found.

So can I ask exactly what it is that people don't like about them? I try and stick to 3 rules: make it bright, make it colourful, make it interesting.

In defense of sketch cards and the other artists that create these, I want to say that it is quite difficult creating a work of quality on something the size of a matchbox and it's never going to make us millionaries but please view these in the manner they were created, unique and individual pieces of art celebrating Steed, Emma, Cathy, Tara, et al..

Ok, I'll get off my soapbox now. Enjoy..

My issue with sketch cards is they are frequently just not very good.

If they were artistic or expressive, or bore a reasonable resemblance to the photos we all know that they have been referenced from, then great.

I would be all for sketches like Rembrandt, Degas, Le Brun, da Vinci, Käthe Kollwitz, Nicolas Sanchez, James Jean or Pat Perry.

However, many meet none of the basic criteria for art.

I had a quick look at your gallery - I like the four doctors sketch and the Emma closeups but I feel you fail to capture Patrick, Honor or Linda. I'm clearly not a fan of colour in sketches either - although I like Sanchez's work - but everyone's different.

I hope that helps.

I'm not a fan of sketch cards to be honest. I do collect the Avengers trading cards and I'm looking forward to the new set, but I just love having new unseen photos. I did have a look at your cards and you've clearly put a lot of work into them, but I do prefer photos. As Piers said the facial expressions can be very difficult to achieve. Here's one exception which I think is stunning artwork. It was terrific seeing The Avengers on the front cover of a magazine a year or so ago. The stunning artwork was also on the centrefold.

Isn't that processed photographs rather than original painting though?

No Frank,it's a genuine painting. The magazine commissioned an artist to paint it.

Here are the links to my latest cards:

I created 25 new sketches for the set that is coming out over the next month. Sketch cards may not be to everybody's tastes but they are still a chance to create something new and I hope you find something here to enjoy..

overall, not bad....interesting....and yeah, I would own these...for my collections of odds and ends...Steed, wasn't done all that b-a--d......The one Peel card, with her pulling her jumpsuit zipper...down...so so...as Emma looks like she's packed on a few extra pounds...and I just don't think she would do something like that..maybe Tara....LOL.......but hey, just my two cents..anyhow, glad to see stuff like this...
