SEND IN THE CLOWNS - THE YO YO LIFE OF IAN HENDRY
BY GABRIEL HERSHMAN
Screen legend Ian Hendry (1931-1984) was the star of six major television series and around 30 films. The original star of The Avengers and, later, series such as The Informer and The Lotus Eaters and For Maddie with Love, Hendry also made outstanding contributions to big movies like Repulsion, The Hill, Theatre of Blood and Get Carter for which he was nominated for a Bafta.
In this, the first ever biography of this outstanding but underrated star, Gabriel Hershman highlights the versatility and hidden subtlety of an artist once hailed as "Britain’s greatest actor" by Brian Clemens. A songwriter as well as a successful actor, whose sentimental ballads revealed a sensitive, vulnerable figure at odds with his tough-guy screen persona and hell-raising image, Hendry's final years were dogged by ill-health.
The biography reveals a multi-talented, charismatic, entertaining and inspirational figure who never recovered from the death of his second wife, actress Janet Munro. It is a touching story of "a ruined genius" (in the words of John Nettles) ultimately destroyed by his own demons. The biography concludes that Ian Hendry was truly Britain's greatest television actor, a man who had everything going for him – except good luck.
Send in the Clowns – the Yo Yo Life of Ian Hendry, by Gabriel Hershman, is available from Lulu.

I am enjoying the book very much. It's a shame the odd typo has got through the proof-reading, notably Patrick Macnee's name being rendered as his reviled "MacNee", but the content is top-notch. There is some incredible 'archaeology', with stuff about Ian Hendry's early career from his friends and contacts of the time, that is mind-blowingly detailed for such a long time ago. A triumph of research to unearth such things!
The early photos of a pre-fame Ian Hendry, in his bedsit and in early roles, are also a nice surprise. Jeez, he was a devilishly handsome fellow. With that acting talent too, it's no wonder everyone was falling at his feet. And you can't begrudge him that either, as he paid such a price later. The light that shines twice as bright burns half as long...

I just finished this.
A great but ultimately depressing biography, definitely worth getting a copy to learn more about the tortured history of Ian Hendry.
My mother was an alcoholic and some of Ian's behaviour was straight from hers, there is no controlling the tendency, the story about asking a friend to pick up a bottle of brandy for him despite claiming to be on top of his addiction in particular. He wasn't fooling himself, he couldn't help himself.
The only fault I would not is that Gabriel has a tendency to make lists.
