Question on Copyright Violations

Post by DaveDJ »

Do you think I could write an Avengers story - in all but name - and try and publish it - maybe for free on Amazon?

I'm thinking of changing the name 'John Steed' to 'Don Reed', for instance.

It would only be an affectionate pastiche.

Or would this still amount to a copyright violation?

(I think Studio Canal own the rights)

There are plenty of fanfic sites out there so maybe try looking at one of those and see if they’ve got any advice? All the best with it :)

I would definitely recommend the fanfic route if you have no intention of selling your work. Best of luck, looking forward to it already!

Thank you, friend.

I must take this opportunity to say how much I love your site of episode summaries. Whenever I've seen an episode, I go and read them to make sure I've followed everything correctly and to see more clearly how the story ebbed and flowed. It's indispensible and I'm glad it's there.

Most corporate entities don't worry about fanfic unless someone is trying to make a profit off of it.

A good point. My defence, even if I never need it, is that my story shall be free.

Haha, I was going to mention that. (For those who don't know, Geoff Barlow wrote some Avengers books with Dave Rogers back in the late 80s/early 90s but didn't ask for clearance for at least some of them [despite his current website claiming they were all authorised] so had the character's names misspelled throughout.

Don't rule it out! The "Fifty Shades..." novels began as Twilight fanfic and have sold in their millions.
